2021 marks the 25th anniversary of the intergovernmental Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Process fostering dialogue and cooperation, mutual respect, and equal partnership between Asia and Europe. ASEM was established in 1996 by 26 Partners comprised of 15 EU Member States, 7 ASEAN Member States, China, Japan, Korea and the European Commission. Today, ASEM comprises 53 Partners: 30 European and 21 Asian countries, the European Union and the ASEAN Secretariat.
ASEM Day
To commemorate the 1st ASEM Summit (ASEM1) held on 1-2 March 1996 in Bangkok, Thailand. ASEM Day was initiated at the 11th ASEM Summit (ASEM11) in 2016 and has been observed annually since 1 March 2017. Various ASEM Partners have commemorated ASEM’s 25th Anniversary through ASEM Day celebrations in 2021.
ASEM at 25: Strengthening Asia-Europe Partnership in a Transforming World
In commemoration of ASEM’s 25th anniversary, Viet Nam hosted the High-level Policy Dialogue titled “ASEM at 25: Strengthening Asia-Europe Partnership in a Transforming World”, held in a hybrid format on 22 June 2021. The Dialogue attracted approximately 200 participants online and offline from 48 ASEM members, including a number of ASEM Foreign Ministers, ASEM SOM leaders, Ambassadors from ASEM member countries in Viet Nam, senior policymakers, researchers, practitioners, universities, businesses, related regional and international organizations and other stakeholders, including the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF).
