The government of Japan, together with the European Commission organised the ASEM Seminar on Adaptation to Climate Change. Hosted by H.E. Mr. Shinsuke Sugiyama (Director-General for Global Issues of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan), this event was held on 2-3 October 2008 in Tokyo, Japan.

The Seminar was co-hosted by Japan, the European Commission, the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam.

Participation

This Seminar was attended by officials, experts, and others concerned from the ASEM member countries and organizations to discuss “adaptation” to negative effects caused by climate change, by focusing on fivefields: water resources, health, agriculture, disaster prevention and biodiversity.

Objectives

The Seminar aims at sharing of scientific knowledge and experience among the ASEM members andimproving the capacity of each country to cope with the issue of adaptation to the negative effects ofclimate change, which is an urgent task that the international community must deal with in concert. Theresults of the Seminar will be reported to the Seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM 7) at the end of October.
