At the 7th ASEM Summit, all ASEM leaders expressed their deep condolences and sympathy over the severe human and property losses incurred in natural disasters in Asia that took place several times prior to the Meeting. Aside from affirming continued commitment to continued assistance to the affected countries, the leaders also stressed the importance of efficient and prompt delivery of humanitarian aid and expertise in case of natural disasters. They highlighted the need for joint global efforts to address global challenges including natural disasters in a timely manner and undertook to conduct practical disaster preparedness and management and reconstruction cooperation in the areas of infrastructure, agriculture, health, water, environment, education, science and technology, with a view to promoting regional and national capacity building in disaster preparedness and management.
In this context, the government of Vietnam proposes a new initiative in the form of ASEM Workshop on Sharing Experiences on Preparedness to Response to Global Climate Change and Emerging Diseases. It is scheduled to take place in November 2009 in Hanoi. More information will be posted here when available.
