European Council President Herman Van Rompuy has called for a new era of dynamic, productive relations with the world outside the EU, but despite some signs this may soon be starting in bilateral summits, it is unlikely to be evident at the eighth ASEM summit (ASEM 8), on 4-5 October.

EuroPolitics Insight published ASEM 8: What strategy to follow?, a section dedicated to the 8th ASEM Summit of Heads of State and Government to be held in Brussels, Belgium from 4-5 October 2010. It includes three articles on ASEM:

  • EU’s new goals put to test - by Chiade O'Shea, pp. 15-16
  • Asia and Europe have much to learn from each other: An Interview with Dominique Girard, executive director of Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), p. 18
  • Europe needs Asia much more than Asia needs Europe: An Interview with Professor Martin Holland, University of Canterbury, New Zealand, p. 19
