During the 8th Asia-Europe Meeting Summit of Heads of Government and State, Laos Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh announced the intention of the Lao People's Democratic Republic to host the next ASEM Summit in 2012. Likewise, leaders present at the Summit welcomed the offer from Laos, as stated in the Chairman's Statement from the meeting.
ASEM Summits between heads of government are held every two years, with venues alternating between Asia and Europe. With the 8th ASEM Summit concluding in Brussels on 5 October 2010, the ASEM Summit is back in Asia for 2012.
