Russia is joining the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), an informal non-binding dialogue forum, established for boosting interaction between the Asian and European countries. The decision will be officially announced in early October, during Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s visit to Brussels, where the ASEM summit is due to be held.

According to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the summit will focus on increasing people’s wealth and ensuring a higher quality of life. The forum’s participants will also discuss such issues as dealing with the aftermath of the world financial crisis, sustainable development, global and regional problems.

Russia will contribute significantly to ASEM activities in strengthening friendship, mutual understanding and cooperation between the peoples of Asia and Europe, and ensuring security and stability in the Euro-Atlantic and Asia-Pacific Regions, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.
