The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) stands as a beacon of collaboration, uniting nations from both continents to foster dialogue and cooperation at the highest levels. With ASEM partner countries representing a significant portion of global trade, GDP, and population, its impact resonates worldwide.
In line with the mandate from the 11th ASEM Summit, Indonesia proudly hosts ASEM Day annually, orchestrated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This year, on 7th March 2024, Surakarta, also known as Solo, played host to this esteemed event, under the theme “Culture.”
Culture serves as a powerful medium to enhance mutual understanding and strengthen bonds among ASEM member countries. Through cultural diplomacy, organiser and participants aimed to celebrate diversity and build bridges between nations. The emphasis on Culture for ASEM Day 2024 aligns with the mission of the Asia Europe Foundation (ASEF), which has played a significant role in promoting mutual understanding through intellectual, cultural, and people-to-people exchanges.
Surakarta’s selection as the event’s venue is a testament to Indonesia’s commitment to celebrating its rich cultural heritage. As a cultural hub in Central Java, Surakarta offers a captivating glimpse into Indonesia’s history and artistic legacy. Delegates and participants had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant tapestry of Indonesian culture, from grand palaces to mesmerising wayang kulit (shadow puppetry) performances.
The event featured a hybrid interactive format, engaging diverse stakeholders from both national and international levels. Representatives from ASEF, UNESCO, ASEM country embassies, cultural experts, universities, and national media came together to discuss cultural diplomacy, prospective initiatives within ASEF, and the presentation of Indonesian culture through showcased performances.
The objectives of ASEM Day 2024 are:
- To contributes to enhancing the visibility of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) among the general public, in alignment with the mandate from the 11th ASEM Summit.
- To foster cultural diplomacy, emphasizing the importance of culture as a powerful medium to enhance mutual understanding and strengthen bonds among ASEM member
- To strengthen the bonds and cooperation between Asia and Europe, emphasizing the role of ASEM in fostering dialogue.
- To facilitate cultural exchange, fostering a deeper understanding of diverse cultures and traditions among ASEM member countries.
- To provide a platform to showcase Indonesia’s cultural wealth, particularly the traditional Javanese arts, crafts, and performances.
