Just two days after workers across Europe staged demonstrations against their governments for being unable to take their countries out of the financial meltdown, Vice-President Hamid Ansari will share with heads and representatives of 48 countries India's experience in successfully tackling the problem.
Talking to reporters on board the special aircraft taking him and senior foreign ministry officials to Belgium for the 8th Asia Europe (ASEM) Summit which begins on Monday, Ansari said, "We (India) are part of the very few countries that were not very badly hit by the global financial crisis and the credit for that goes to the sound policies the government had pursued in the financial sector. These policies did not create the kind of situation of irresponsibility that happened in the western countries."
Saying that the crisis still persisted in some countries, Ansari said, "Our view is that you have to keep a careful balance so that growth is not retarded. That is the basic approach the government has been taking and the Prime Minister has been speaking about it at G-20 meetings and various other fora".
Ansari will also hold bilateral meetings with leaders of some European countries, including European Council President Herman Von Rompuy and Belgian PM Yves Leterme.
Ansari is also expected to push for a comprehensive convention against international terrorism, a proposal India had first mooted in 1996.
"Terrorism is very high on our agenda and of many other countries as well. Our views are very clear. We basically want to push for sustained international efforts," the Vice-President said.
