Poland takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) from January to June 2025. The presidency coincides with a critical period of geopolitical challenges, including Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, tensions in the Middle East and global economic uncertainty. Poland’s EU Presidency programme outlines seven key priorities: defence and security, borders, information, economics, energy, food and health. The programme is expected, inter alia, to catalyse stronger ties with the Indo-Pacific region, foster transatlantic cooperation and revitalise the Eastern Partnership. Overall, Poland’s leadership is expected to play a key role in fostering deeper engagement between Asia and Europe, focusing on security cooperation, economic resilience and cultural exchange. The Polish Presidency will prioritise support for the cultural and creative sectors, media, education and youth, highlighting the role of young people in fostering collaboration. However, challenges exist, such as in climate-related trade regulations, with differences in views between EU and Asian countries on the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D) and the Deforestation Regulation.
In conjunction with the Polish EU Presidency, ASEF is proud to launch our first AIB podcast in February 2025 on the topic, “How will Poland steer the EU and EU’s relations with Asia during its 6-month rotating EU Council Presidency and beyond?” We invite AIB-TPM readers to send us your questions and/or comment on the topic by 4 February 2025. Selected questions and comment will be addressed by our experts during the upcoming podcast. Stay tuned for the specific day of the podcast launch!
